This by far is one of the best band's I have heard in awhile...I am looking at going to their concert at the Greek in LA,CA. My favorite songs on this CD in very particular order: Electric Feel, Time to Pretend, and Kids. If you like this style of music check out: Miike Snow

One of the things that's caught my attention about pop music in the last couple decades or so has been this musical intricacy and/or production of any kind,especially in the rock world was in bad taste and since than there's been one consciencious effort after another to make the sound of the music simpler and more and more stripped down-even in punk circles. In recent years the rebirth of twee rock,neo psychedelia and to an extent reggaeton have saught to find some sort of happy medium. In a lot of cases however some bands have been popping up in the last couple of years that just don't seem to care about any of that and just want to proudly where their musical flavors on their sleeves and just want to see how good the music sounds. MGMT are some of the later types of people. The music this album produces actually has no label. The songs are actually a very intricately produced (and therefore somewhat unfasionable) bleeding of textures very much in the psychedelic sound but not exactly psychedelia itself. Rather some equivilant I can't name that's very expansive soundwise and owes little to alternative rock or anything like that. "Time To Pretend","Weekend Wars","Kids","The Handshake" and "Future Reflection" all deal very well with this style. There are gushes of poetic wordly about the modern rock and roll lifestyle and from that actually showcases how the music seems to be coming somewhat full circle from the 1960s onwards. There are other songs here such as "The Youth","Pieces Of What" and "Of Moons,Birds And Monsters" that bring to mind more of a direct rock sound but again in the vein of psychedelic pop/rock inspired by the mid 60's but (again) rooted and built upon it's strong craft and production as opposed to heavy simplicity. There are two cuts here that are very interesting and in one case pretty near amazing. "4'th Dimentional Transition" brings in the ska/afro-pop style beat back into the music again,not that it ever really went away but the mystical oriented lyrics are very appropriate (either ironically or intentionally) to the cultural backround of the music. "Electric Feel" is not only a great choice for a single but also finds MGMT making an INCREDIBLE contribution to the style of new wave funk. It has an amazing disco-funk bassline,this well chorded fuzzed out keyboard riff and this very sophisticated sense of rhythm that reminds you,as did Queen and Talking Heads did long before this how important funk's technical complexity was to the developement of rock from that point on. Even now this album might be viewed as something of an oddity,perhaps even indulgent. But MGMT have still remained critically acclaimed,have a very broad audience and one could easily guess that the kind of sound they're creating here could easily spell out a vital,strong new direction for pop especially at a time where it could really use some.

It's hard to fully explain how much I love this album; I listened to it nonstop the summer before my freshman year in high school, so it has a tremendous sentimental value for me. Every single song on this album is a masterpiece in its own way. With every listen I found intricacies that I hadn't heard before, making it feel like I was hearing it all again for the first time. Some people would argue that this album has its standout singles, the rest being fillers, but I disagree. Sure, Electric Feel, Kids, and Time to Pretend are the most well-known, but their counterparts are arguably better. This album blew me away; if you're looking for something a little off the beaten path, but not too obscure that it becomes unenjoyable, it's a great musical investment. I haven't been this excited about a band since the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and for me and my two year obsession with them, that's saying something. Buy it, listen to it the whole way through, and if you're still not convinced, I'm really not sure what could do the convincing.

This album should be played on repeat. Catchy beats and grooves had me and my husband bopping our heads through out. Definitely uplifting if you are getting ready to go out and party!

There is a reason this album propelled MGMT into the mainstream. This album is brilliant. OS is probably as mainstream as MGMT will ever get, but an amazing album nonetheless.
